Animals are family. In times of crisis, they deserve protection, care, and safety. Yet when natural disasters hit, animals are often left behind, frightened and alone. Humane Canada's National Animal Emergency Response Program is working to change that. With your support, we will build a country-wide system that rescues animals, reunites families, and gives professional responders the tools they need to act fast. No one should have to choose between their own safety and the animals they love.
Animals are often left out of emergency planning. Evacuation protocols & emergency services are usually designed for people, even though over 60% of Canadians have at least one pet that they consider family. Shelters are overwhelmed & families are forced to make heartbreaking decisions. Some refuse to evacuate without their animals or they flee & are separated for weeks, sometimes forever. As climate emergencies become more frequent & severe, the need for a national system for animals is urgent.
Humane Canada is creating a national response network that brings animal welfare professionals into emergency planning from the start, not as an afterthought. With shared rescue protocols, training, & stronger connections between shelters & first responders, we can reduce suffering when every second counts. Your support helps to create trust between agencies & give animals the best chance of survival & reunion. We will protect the most vulnerable, strengthen communities & keep families together.
This project will change what it means to be prepared. Animals will not be left behind. Families will no longer be forced to make impossible choices. Shelters will no longer be pushed to the brink. Responders will be trained and ready. The long-term impact is measured in every life saved, every family reunited, & every animal that gets to come home. With your support, we are building more than a response system. We are creating a future where compassion is built into every emergency plan.
