On 28 March, a powerful earthquake devastated central Myanmar, affecting over 6 million people in 56 townships with a shake intensity of 6 or higher. Lives, homes, roads, bridges, livelihoods and access to basic services have been destroyed. Tekkatho is responding with emergency support - including shelter, clean water, food, sanitation and protection services - and is committed to long-term recovery and rebuilding in the hardest-hit communities.
The earthquake epicentre struck in Sagaing, a conflict-affected region outside government control. It was an earthquake on top of conflict, on top of huge existing need. Tens of thousands of survivors have lost their homes and urgently need food, clean water, safe shelter and sanitation. Daily aftershocks continue, leaving people too afraid to return to damaged buildings for shelter and belongings and the need for immediate basic humanitarian aid is immense.
Tekkatho is on the ground in Sagaing, responding with urgent support - shelter, clean water, food and medical aid - for families left homeless and vulnerable by the earthquake. Working with trusted local partners, we reach communities beyond the access of larger agencies. With your help, we can deliver life-saving relief including sleeping mats, blankets mosquito nets, tarpaulin, portable solar chargers, low-tech water filters, first aid, supporting long-term recovery where it's needed most.
After the dust has settled, we will still be there. Tekkatho has worked in Myanmar for over a decade, reaching communities in every state and region through 70 learning centers. We're helping rebuild with our local partners - repairing shelters, restoring power, and replacing lost roofs before the rainy season. Looking ahead, with your support, we'll continue to deliver education to young people in under-served areas and rebuild our classrooms to keep children learning, wherever they live.
