Awareness and Nature trail
Awareness in schools children continues in the region the information about the Importance of various plants and their role in the environment. This session helps to create curiosity and Knowledge about Nature in the young mind and most important is spread awareness to protect nature throughout the region. Field experience is the most important key for field experience Nature trail was taken for the children in which they get hands-on knowledge about the plants, birds in their surrounding there importance. In Nature trail, children’s learn to identification key characteristic of Plants and Birds, Identification through Nature guide. Such activity brings this generation more close to nature which will help this young’s mind to take steps for conservation and nature protection in the region
Tree plantation
Regular Tree Plantation activity is taking place in the region with the help of the local people. The native tree such as Lagerstroemia speciosa (Tamhan), Alstonia scholaris (Satvin), Ficus religiosa (Pimple), Memecylon umbellatun (Anjani), Syzygium cumini (Jambul) etc. Through such activity, local people involved in conservation during the plantation local people were aware of the importance of such native plants.
Strengthening local livelihoods
Meeting and discussion on the community livelihoods, some livelihood areas that can be strengthened have been identified in these discussions such as Homestay and Apiculture. Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra had taken steps and started Homestay in Choravane village in the region where wildlife enthusiast and trekker’s visits and stay at local villagers place through which local villagers generate a sustainable resource of livelihood. Apiculture or Beekeeping is one of the sustainable resources of livelihood Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra had started training for the local villager and providing native honeybee Apis cerena species Honey bee boxes. Such activity help in conservation of native honeybees and through bee pollination increased in a crop, fruits productivity in the region.
Awareness Workshop
To create awareness for conservation of Indian Pangolin awareness workshop held at Mandangad block of Ratnagiri district. Village head, Police Patil, and students of the various schools and colleges, officers from the forest department and police department and local villagers were present from entire block. Officials from forest department introduced to people the laws and current status of Indian pangolin. At the end of the workshop, all people gave the pledge to the conservation of Indian pangolin in their work area.
Natural water resources conservation
Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra with local people of Choravane village had built a small dam at Choravane village water stream for water conservation and fulfill the requirement of water in the village. Past few years local villagers facing water shortage in the region even the groundwater level was dropped to get rid of such issues Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra had discussed with villagers and had built a dam in the region with local support.
Camera Trap Wildlife Survey
The camera traps are set up in consultation with the community members having expertise and knowledge about wildlife. Compilation of the images from the trap cameras will be an important aid in awareness generation on the wildlife existing in the area.
