Expanding Our Oral Histories and Stories

By Andrew McDonald | Project Leader

This Summer, the Muslim American Journeys project continued to grow, and expand its reach to Muslim communities across the country.  To date, MALA has collected over 500 stories from a diverse array of Muslim Americans, including: entrepreneurs, community leaders, elected officials, artists, philanthropists, and creative minds from all disciplines.

The Muslim American Journeys project offers a unique approach to oral history, which seeks to create a community resource of stories and lived experiences that is accessible and open to all.  In recognition of this, MALA has been invited to lead a panel at the annual conference of the prestigious Oral History Association centering on the importance of archiving Muslim American stories.

MALA is also expanding the Journeys project to new media forms.  This Fall, we will be releasing a mini-series of brief video stories focusing on Muslim artists in New York City.  Stay tuned for the release of this groundbreaking series, and be sure to check out the MALA website for new stories, community initiatives, and perspectives from America's diverse Muslim communities. Meanwhile, join us in Washington DC; Chicago; and NY for programs dedicated to spotlight our unique story-tellers and their incredible life journeys!
