Celebrating Heritage Through Journeys

By Andrew McDonald | Operations Manager

The Muslim American Journeys project began with the vision of creating a platform for American Muslims to share their stories in their own words and on their own terms.  The project is open to anyone who identifies as Muslim, or as having Muslim heritage to share their stories, and have their experiences archived in the National Library of Congress.

MALA's Muslim American Journeys story collection currently exceeds 500 unique stories, with more being added all the time.  In fact, just in the past few months, we have added 50 new stories as a part of our MALA Scholarship Program.  MALA's story collection reflects the diverse and intersectional plethora of identities, individuals, and experiences that make up America's Muslim communities.
MALA has also worked to initiate inclusive grassroots community events in Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., and beyond.  MALA's programming seeks to bring people together to learn, discuss, and reflect on heritage, culture, tradition, and the things that connect us.  This year we have hosted a plethora of events ranging from an expert panel on FGM hosted in conjunction with the UNCSW, to a Nowruz Global Festival with Shiraz Wine experts in Chicago, to a screening of the film, RBG featuring a discussion with the filmmakers in New York.  We look forward to hosting more exciting programming, and growing our community through cutting-edge arts and culture programming.
By supporting MALA, you help us to continue building and curating this collection, you help us to continue expanding our platform to reach more communities, and, you empower us to deepen our mission in ways that build stability, cohesion, and inclusivity in American society.
