Last March, Ken Sarno's wife Susan read an article on the Huffington Post about Portugal. The Man working with us and StubHub Foundation. "Every kid should have access to the tools that will shape who they become as adults. I have no idea where I would be if I didn't have instruments available at a young age," said band member Zach Carothers.
Well, as a result, Ken came to our office to donate 10 beautiful electric guitars and four bass guitars from his personal collection. We're happy to report that all of his guitars have new homes in schools across Los Angeles, including Centennial High School in Compton.
Centennial band director Manuel Castaneda brought Julian, a student and percussionist, to help him pick out a few guitars. Manuel couldn't help but to boast about Julian's straight A's this semester and his recent admission to the 2015 California State Summer School for the Arts program. The sky is the limit for this new guitarist.
We thank Ken, Portugal. The Man and all of our wonderful donors for making the year ahead brighter for many students! Find out here how you can donate a musical instrument!
We are announcing new grant recipients, follow us on our social media pages to hear more stories from grateful students, parents and teachers!
