Happy spring from ETM!
Thank you for uplifting thousands of inner-city students by supporting ETM’s New York City Partner School Program. Your generosity is benefiting our first-year partner school music programs, where over 4,000 students are participating in in-school weekly music classes—many for the first time! By providing them with music as part of a well-rounded education, you are increasing their chances for success in life.
One of these students is Annalise—a fourth-grader who attends first-year partner school P.S. 106 in Queens. Her school is located in Far Rockaway, where nearly a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line. Annalise struggles with self-esteem. In class, she is easily discouraged, and when faced with challenging classwork, she often shuts down immediately and is reluctant to vocalize what is bothering her. Occasionally, she acts out and disrupts instruction.
This fall, ETM’s music program launched at Annalise’s school. As Annalise started attending music class, week after week, something beautiful began happening within her. She started taking comfort in the ability to express herself through singing. Empowered by her new passion, Annalise decided to take a leap of faith and joined the school’s chorus.
Annalise’s music teacher recognized that Annalise was capable of completing her classwork, but needed clear guidelines and encouragement. Her teacher has devoted extra attention to helping Annalise stay on track in class and gain assurance in her abilities. In the months since, Annalise has experienced a remarkable turn-around in her self-confidence. “Annalise is starting to verbalize when she is stuck and to speak up for herself,” shared her music teacher. “Through reading and playing music in both class and chorus, Annalise is learning to problem solve and work independently.”
With the school year coming to a close, Annalise’s dramatic transformation is a wonderful sight to see. She no longer needs to be prompted to engage with her school work or to ask help when she needs it. Annalise can be seen walking around the halls of P.S. 106 with her head held high—often singing to herself. With this significant progress underway and her higher self-esteem, Annalise is headed towards a brighter future.
