This project will establish a nursery seed bed for fruit trees, with the intention of growing at least 5000 trees per year. These trees will be transferred to schools and community locations where low income children will gain nutrition from the fruit and learn the agriculture skills required to care for them organically. The trees will reduce soil erosion, decrease the incidence of droughts and floods by balancing soil moisture, and sequester carbon from the atmosphere to combat climate change.
Drastic deforestation has resulted from trees being cleared to grow staple crops like maize and potatoes, and also for creating firewood to be used for cooking and for boiling/sanitizing water. Deforestation has caused floods and droughts that have jeopardized farming. Many families experience food insecurity. Many schools want to grow trees, but lack the agricultural knowledge necessary to successfully grow them from seed organically and to teach students these crucial skills.
In addition to combatting climate change, this project will raise the community's awareness about deforestation and the importance of sustainable agriculture. Students will gain organic farming skills and learn how to recycle organic waste into compost. They can then become leaders and ambassadors in sharing the knowledge with their families and communities. The fruit will provide a continual source of nutrition for the students. The trees will provide seeds for new trees.
The trees will combat climate change. Organic practices will heal the soil, making it more fertile for future crops. We will restore wildlife habitats for animals that live in trees. We will increase community awareness of the impact of deforestation on the environment and increase knowledge of sustainable agriculture. Increased access to nutrition through fruit will improve child physical and cognitive development. Students assisting with the seed beds will gain stipends to pay school fees.
