Dear friend of Motivation Romania,
Each year, on September 5th, is World Spinal Cord Injury Day. This is an important occasion for Motivation to raise awareness, for prevention and talking about access to appropriate mobility equipment, independent living training and community programs for children and adults using wheelchairs.
Anyone can suffer spinal injuries through accidents, falls from heights, while playing games, or through other trauma.
When the spinal cord is affected, one cannot feel their body and cannot move under the level of the injury. Imagine what it would be like if some of YOUR daily activities, like moving around, getting dressed, putting shoes on, or brushing your teeth, would suddently become excruciatingly difficult.
Thousands of children and adults have joined Motivation over the years, after a spinal cord injury (SCI), to learn to continue their lives in a wheelchair. These are people whose injuries have turned their worlds upside down, shattered their self-confidence and plans for the future. The impact of SCI does not stop there – it also affects independence, emotions, family and community.
“I found out I was not the man I had been. I was in shock!”
Constantin fell from the second floor while working, and was left unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he could not walk anymore. After that, it was difficult for him even to sit upright in the wheelchair. Passing thresholds or transferring from the wheelchair to the car seemed impossible. He would only talk to his wife and children, feeling that life was not worth living anymore.
Then, he met Gabi from Motivation Romania. “She came to my house, saw how things were, brought me ramps and invited me to a training session. And when I went there, I learned to go about in a wheelchair, to be independent. It helped me both physically and mentally,” says Constantin.
At Motivation, Constantin received a wheelchair that was fitted for his needs. With this wheelchair and the appropriate training, each movement gradually became a step towards more independence.
Listen to Constantin as he tells the story of his journey to independence!
Motivation is here to support each wheelchair user on this route, one at a time. As new wheelchair users ask for our help, YOUR ongoing donation means WE can continue to be there for them as guides towards new ways of being mobile and independent.
Make a monthly gift of hope and freedom of movement to children and adults with mobility disabilities like Constantin!
YOU help change lives for the better.
Thank you!
