Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (FAME, Inc.) partners with Boeing’s rising leaders to inspire career confidence in students.

WILMINGTON, Delaware – The “E” in STEM typically stands for engineering, but middle and high school students enrolled in FAME, Inc.’s CORE Enrichment Program are also learning skills involving a different “E,” entrepreneurship.

Volunteers from Boeing’s Leadership Next (LX) class of 2020 spent July 10 at Alexis I. duPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware, interacting with 150 students who were able to engage, interact, and learn from LX volunteers from Boeing’s Supply Chain Integration; Aerodynamics Engineering; Procurement; and Quality Engineering programs.

“Encouraging students in underrepresented populations to peruse STEM careers is key to driving diversity in the industry,” said Tim Hartley, Supply Chain Integrator with Boeing. “When you also teach them about entrepreneurship, they will develop the skills to become leaders in their fields.”

FAME, Inc. operates a six-week summer enrichment initiative for students in grades 4 through 10 at Alexis I. duPont High School. The theme for the summer of 2019 is “A Million Dollar Summer” where students are learning about entrepreneurship in STEM, business planning, idea generation, and innovation. Each morning students are challenged academically while afternoons are reserved for Project Based Learning (PBL) and group practical application.

“We are grateful for our partnership with Boeing,” said Donald Baker, CEO of FAME. Inc. “Together, we continue to STEMulate® Change in Delaware and surrounding areas by introducing students to real life STEM professionals who are problem solving to improve our world each and every day. Students need to understand the link between what they learn in the classroom and how it gets applied in a career.”

In addition to learning lessons in STEM, students are provided with daily meals and bus transportation. FAME, Inc. students in grades 11 and 12 reside on campus at the University of Delaware and gain early exposure to college level courses through the College of Engineering over a four-week period.
