Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (FAME, Inc.) launched our 2019 Code Academy for students in partnership with Code Differently. Code Academy sessions took place on Saturday April 6th, May 4th, and May 18th from 9am-12pm at John Dickinson High School in Wilmington, Delaware. In total, 84 FAME, Inc. students participated. Younger students (grades 4-6) were able to learn about Sphero software while older students (grades 7-12) learned about Alexa software.

The Code Academy bridges the Tech Access Gap by equipping youth with the technical and cognitive skills needed to excel in technology driven classrooms and workplaces. Through hands-on instruction and collaborative projects, curricula are designed to challenge, entertain, and empower youth while preparing them for an ever-evolving business landscape.

With technology changing the way that we do nearly every job, from manual labor to banking to healthcare to law enforcement, coding curricula exists to bolster a culture of learning that is essential for the future.Although not every child will enter a career in technology, all children should have a basic understanding of how technology works and how it’s built, preferably at an early age. By tying software to the real world, the Code Academy aims to show youth the tactical purposes of technology from a wide, holistic lens.

The earlier that coding skills and core values are introduced, the more likely they are to have a lasting impact, especially if the experience is enjoyable for students.

Goals for the 2019 Code Academy are to:

  • Introduce students to coding and equip them with the foundational skills needed to excel in the classroom and, eventually, in the workplace;
  • Build equity and create access in communities by fostering a culture of learning and collaboration around information technology; and
  • Establish meaningful connections between the community and local entrepreneurs and technologists.
