On September 8, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco, causing devastation across the High Atlas Mountains and the city of Marrakech. As of September 9, the death toll exceeded 2,000 people, and, sadly, this number is likely to increase as recovery efforts continue and assistance reaches remote areas. As aftershocks continue, families across the earthquake-impact area are sleeping in the streets, fearful of sheltering in their damaged homes.
Since 1987, Near East Foundation has partnered with many of the hardest hit Moroccan communities. These areas include Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudante, Chichaoua, and many villages on the southern slope of the High Altas mountains. Our staff in Morocco are mobilizing resources to assist heavily impacted communities and are asking for your support. Your donation will support help communities meet critical basic needs, restore basic services, and begin to recover from the disaster.
We are working to rapidly assess their needs and to deliver vital assistance. Soon, these efforts will turn from critical, life-saving needs to recovery and rebuilding lives and livelihoods. NEF has committed to helping during each of these steps, and our established partnerships with community organizations and local governments mean that local communities will remain in the lead.
