INTRODUCTION
Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) is once again is glad to share with us our progress report on Moringa to support Kenyan Farmer’s health and wealth. DNRC continues to work with over 800 smallholders farmers in the drylands to address the challenges of environmental degradation, Economic meltdown and community disintegration. Moringa Aloefera is one of the diverse tree seedlings propagated in our tree nursery which has the potential to address the mentioned challenges. It grows very fast thus giving vegetation cover very fast, does well in drylands and the leaves and seeds are known for their high nutrition, Some DNRC farmers have testified positive healthy impacts from consuming Moringa.As more people get to know the health benefits of Moringa tree,more are asking for its products thus increasing the market. Moringa oil is very good for skin benefits thus as well increasing its market. Below are detailed activities done during this reporting period.
TRAINING AND FOLLOW UPS
During this reporting period, DNRC outreach staff was majorly involved in training farmers on Moringa tree management as well as monitoring the young upcoming Moringa trees. They also Majored on retraining the farmers on how to identify and harvest the ready Moringa leaves, handling and processing fresh leaves.
PROPAGATION OF Moringa SEEDLINGS.
During this reporting period, DNRC staff in charge of the nursery we busy propagating Moringa seedlings. A total of 6017 seedlings were propagated and a being tended in the nursery waiting for issuance during the upcoming rains.
PROCESSING MORINGA LEAVES AND MORINGA OIL
During this reporting quarter, we received from farmers and processed over 10kgs of Moringa leaves and pressed over 20 litres of moringa oil.
