Summary

Indigenous children in Mexico deserve to play, learn and be healthy. Untreated epilepsy poses a barrier for their normal development including education and socializing. No child should carry the burden of a serious medical condition. ChildFund Mexico seeks support for girls and boys living with this disease in remote communities, who urgently require medical consultation and specific medication (one year supply). Help us make their lives brighter!

Challenge

Epilepsy represents one of the most frequent chronic diseases in the world, causing high rates of mortality, comorbidity and disability, particularly in developing countries. The clinical and epidemiological characteristics and the impact it causes on those who suffer it and their social environment vary greatly by region, so it is essential to understand the peculiarities of epilepsy in Mexico, specially within the children who do not have access to treatment.

Solution

To facilitate access to treatment and resources for children in low-income families affected by epilepsy, improving their quality of life and promoting community awareness of the condition. This involves a combination of medical, educational and awareness-raising approaches, providing a year's supply of medication and consultations to children in vulnerable communities. Medicines play a crucial role in the treatment of childhood epilepsy.

Long-Term Impact

The More Play, Less Seizures for Rural Children project, by providing appropriate treatment and support to children with epilepsy, will improve their health and well-being, which can translate into a greater ability to participate in educational and occupational activities in the future. A healthier and more educated population tends to be more economically productive.
