Project Report | Feb 9, 2026
Thank you for all your support. This is our final report on UPAVIM.

By Eleanor Latimer | President

UPAVIM (Unidas Para Vivir Mejor) is a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering the community of La Esperanza, Guatemala, through education and economic opportunity. Founded in 1988 by a group of determined women, UPAVIM has evolved into a key community organization that addresses the urgent threats of poverty, violence, and social isolation facing the residents of La Esperanza and surrounding areas.  We've been supporting UPAVIM since the summer of 2024, helping to train a teacher in Montessori pedagogy at the elementary level.

Brenda has completed all her online course-work and just has her in-person practicum work to complete.  Bureaucractic hurdles have slowed down obtaining a visa for her travels to the in-person portion of her course.  At the same time, her online course-work has given her deep understanding of Montessori principles and their application at the elementary level. She's applying those in her current classroom guidance.

We're so pleased with her progress to date.  She's having a positive impact on the elementary-age children of La Esperanza.  We've been advised that Brenda will complete her in-person training within the next 18 months.

We have to thank all of you who have donated, often monthly, to support Brenda in her journey to become a certified AMI Montessori elementary teacher.  Clearly, it's been an arduous route.  Nevertheless, because of your financial support she is guiding children in Le Esperanza to become confident learners, well-prepared academically and socially.

While we are closing down this project on GlobalGiving, we hope you will continue to support Montessori GlobalGiving Fund's other efforts through our other GlobalGiving project, 70747 Train a Teacher, Equip a Classroom, Teach a Child.
