By David Jesse | Friend of the Farm
A lot has happened since we inherited the farm back in February. We started with a major clean up of the building, then moved outside to tame the jungle. Over 150 trees were planted, the greenhouse was rebuilt, land was divided into garden and cover crops, organic certification was started, the well was cleaned and a basic irrigation system was installed.
Then it didn’t rain for months, and nothing was growing. Good thing we got the drip irrigation system working…
From May we started working with a group of farmers from the village to deliver bags of fruits and vegetables around the city by bicycle. We have about 30 individual clients and some offices that receive baskets. This project, known as Eco-village Farms, has its own site:
ecovillage.farms.md
Thanks to our supporters, we are starting to convert the main building into a shared kitchen space this summer. We even received our first tenant last weekend, Cristina, who brought her commercial dehydrator and plans to make fruit and nut mixes.
