In Nigeria 26,000 women, 50% of children with malaria, accident victims, cancer and sickle cell anemia patients all die because of blood shortage. One Percent Project is creating a movement to inspire thousands of young Nigerians to give blood to save all these people. We are harnessing the power of technology and media to get 2 million young people registered on our donor database. To do this, we need to go where people are and we need a mobile blood bank.
UNICEF reports that close to 2,300 children under the age of 5, and 145 mothers to die every day in Nigeria. Also, over 6,000 Nigerians die from road traffic crashes in Nigeria every year. WHO also reports that 150,000 Nigerians live with sickle-cell anemia and around 40 million people have lost a relative or a close friend to this disease. A significant amount of these deaths can directly be attributed to shortage of blood. These deaths are preventable and we are working to do that.
Our mobile blood bank will help to collect over 1 million pints of blood in a year and save almost 3 million people. We are building a movement of ready blood donors to save lives in Africa. We are also committed to building the larges blood donor database in Africa and this mobile blood bank will help us achieve our big dream of saving 3 million lives in a year. For every pint of blood we collect, we get to save about 3 lives.
Our long term impact will be to save lives and ensure a thriving community. Our project will also help improve conflict resolution because if you Nigerians see that their neighbors care about their well being, conflict will reduce. We are also saving the planet. Data shows that when maternal and child mortality goes down, people have less children and this puts less strain on the planet.
