By 2025, the Refugee Educator Academy will provide 10,000 teachers around the world, with online training, resources, and support, on any mobile device and one million refugee students will receive a better education. Access will be openly available to the refugee educator workforce including in schools, camps, relocation centers. We will improve the educational outcomes for world's most vulnerable individuals: refugees. This project will support the training of our first 20 refugee educators.
A top threat to equitable quality education worldwide is the lack of trained teachers, particularly for refugees. UNESCO reports 69 million teachers need to be recruited by 2030. 1 in 200 children in the world is a refugee, in the US 1 in 5 a "newcomer" most are suffering from trauma. Basic teacher training, including "trauma-informed" teaching skills, is critical.
The Refugee Educator Academy offers basic teacher training providing dynamic course content, mentoring, and peer-learning communities to ensure that teachers are well-prepared and supported year-round. Every one teacher trained can reach 100 or more students multiplying the effect of their training and helping assure the goal of improving outcomes for 1,000,000 students by 2025.
Every education system is only as good as the teachers who provide the hands-on "schooling". Study after study has confirmed their critical role in improving education quality and learning outcomes. For refugee students the need for well-trained teachers is more acute as they adjust to a new country, a new community and their own traumatic histories.
