Shanghai Roots & Shoots aims to reduce the negative impacts of desertification on the local environment and communities in northern China by planting trees while providing an opportunity for individuals and organizations to fight climate change. Since 2007, R&S has been working with local communities and authorities in Inner Mongolia, together with individuals and organizations all over the world, to plant trees and bring positive changes to the planet.
China is one of the countries severely affected by desertification. The desertified land area in China is 2,622,000 square kilometers, accounting for 27.4% of the country's land area. Nearly 400 million people are affected by desertification, causing a direct economic loss of about 7.8 billion USD every year. Among these desertified land areas, Inner Mongolia accounts for 617,700 square kilometers, accounting for 23.5% of the total desertified land area in China.
The project aims to improve the ecological conditions in Inner Mongolia by planting trees together with local farmers to fight against desertification and climate change. All trees will be planted in the most affected villages or areas where the local communities will directly benefit from the improved ecological environment and any income from the planted forests. Also, we will monitor the growth of the trees to ensure all the trees are preserved for at least 10 years.
The local ecological environment will be improved year by year and the local economic loss due to desertification will be alleviated. At the same time, villagers will receive economic income from tree planting and forest benefits. Overall, 10,000 trees will be planted in Tongliao, Inner Mongolia, with 12 hectares of deserted land being transformed.
The Government of People’s Republic of China has implemented new regulations for foreign NGOs operating in China. GlobalGiving must receive Government approval before we can disburse funds to organizations registered in Mainland China. This means that the disbursement of your donation to this project may be slightly delayed while we obtain the appropriate approval.
