Every day, over 800 women in sub-Saharan Africa die from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes, of which 80% are preventable. With $10,000, we can train 40 community midwives who can provide potentially life-saving care for up to 20,000 women in a year. This campaign will also supply midwives with kits and bicycles to help them reach remote areas and give critically needed care with the necessary supplies. Help us give mom & baby the strongest start of life!
Two-thirds of all preventable maternal deaths in the world occur in Sub-saharan Africa. Most of these women live in rural communities far from the few health facilities available, and a shortage of trained health workers makes it difficult to access the care that women need before, during, and after childbirth. This project will train 40 midwives to help alleviate these pregnancy complications and provide them with bicycles and mama kits to reach remote areas and provide hands-on care.
When a woman delivers her baby under the care of a midwife, she drastically reduces her risk to these preventable causes. Through training, our midwives will improve their skills in safely delivering babies and learn new skills like resuscitating newborns. We use multiple methods to train midwives, including classroom-based teaching and training via phone apps, allowing us to train local African health workers quickly, efficiently, and skillfully.
One skilled midwife can care for around 500 mothers each year. This project can train 40 midwives who have the potential to reach 20,000 women. Midwives also provide family planning counseling, sexually transmitted infection detection and treatment, and sexual and reproductive health services. This helps women, partners, and teens become advocates for their own reproductive health and make informed decisions around family planning.
