Updates from Children of Balajothi!

By Ajit Bhimesh | Volunteer

Here is the breakup of the amount spent on the mid-day meals served for the three months to the children of Balajothi.

Feb  2015    Rs.6,800.00 (USD ~113)

Mar  2015    Rs.8,325.00 (USD ~139)

Apr  2015     Rs.6,925.00 (USD ~115)

On an invitation from Rotary Club of Bangalore our special children attended a music program featuring Shri Vidur Mahajan with his accomplices. The program was received with great interest and enthusiasm.

Also as part of the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR), we distributed 10 kgs rice, 5 kgs atta, 3 kgs refined oil and 5 kgs sugar to 10 children around Mysore. This was made possible by the generous contribution of the volunteers of Oracle Computers in Bangalore.

At Balajothi we care for children with multiple disorders, predominant of them being Autism, Cerebral Palsy & Intellectual disability (ID) formerly known as mental retardation.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child's life. These signs often develop gradually, though some children with autism reach their developmental milestones at a normal pace and then regress. Early speech or behavioral interventions can help children with autism gain self-care, social, and communication skills. Although there is no known cure, there have been reported cases of children who recovered. Not many children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood, though some become successful.

Cerebral Palsy is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. Most often the problems occur during pregnancy; however, they may also occur during childbirth, or shortly after birth. Often the cause is unknown. There is no cure for CP; however, supportive treatments, medications, and surgery may help many individuals. This may include physical therapy and speech therapy.

Children with Intellectual disability learn more slowly than a typical child. Children may take longer to learn language, develop social skills, and take care of their personal needs, such as dressing or eating. Learning will take them longer, require more repetition, and skills may need to be adapted to their learning levels. Nevertheless, virtually every child is able to learn, develop and become a participating member of the community.

In each of these situations an early detection backed with attention, therapy, training & support we can enable these children live close to normal life, this the mission of Balajothi.
