Progress report of the micro loan project

We recently conducted support and suppervision visits on our farmers' businesses. The visits aimed at checking the status of businesses for women who took microloan money in December 2024, how women are embrassing the skills they acquired duing the trainined that happened in the December 2024 as well as  equip women with skills that they would need to run their businesses.

Key highlights and progress of the project

Enhanced Personal and business budgeting skills

Women have mastered the art of managing cash flows and budgeting appropriately before spending. With this, they have been able to solve their financial challenges in an organised manner. Josephine, a retail shop attendant says she has been able to do budgeting before she spends. In this way, she gets to know how much to spend and how much to save.

Enhanced Cash flow management skills

Farmers have enhanced their skills in managing cash flow and budgeting wisely before making any expenditures. This disciplined approach has enabled them to address their financial challenges in a structured manner. Women follow a budgeting plan before spending, allowing them to determine how much to allocate for expenses and how much to save. Asaba Margret, on the other hand, ensures that the income from her milling machine is not used for daily necessities. Instead, she established another business to support her family's everyday needs.

Women, too, have excelled in the art of financial management, carefully planning their cash flow and budgets before spending. This proactive strategy has helped them navigate financial hurdles effectively. Kevina, for instance, prioritizes budgeting, which helps her balance spending and savings. Likewise, Asaba Margret takes a strategic approach by keeping her milling business earnings separate from daily expenses, opting to run an additional enterprise to sustain her household needs.

Improved basic Record keeping skills

The beneficiaries have enhanced their business record-keeping skills through training and guidance. As a result, they can now accurately track their profits, losses, new stock, and sales on a weekly and monthly basis. This improved record-keeping has enabled them to gain a clear understanding of their financial performance, helping them make informed decisions to grow their businesses.

Improved Customer service techniques and sales

Women now pay attention to the quality of heir products by conducting regular inspections to keep them in good condition. They actively gathers customer feedback to enhance their shopping experience and satisfaction. Josephine and Kevina  organize their shops into different zones based on product demand, ensuring that the most sought-after items remain readily available and of high quality.

Beneficiaries have also adopted effective marketing strategies to expand their businesses. Josephine, for instance, has leveraged eye-catching window displays to attract more customers while improving the overall organization of her shop. She has also introduced a referral-based discount system, rewarding customers who bring in new buyers. This approach has boosted her marketing efforts, increased her customer base, and enhanced her profitability.

Similarly, Eva, a poultry farmer, prioritizes product quality improvement to attract and retain customers. She has enhanced her chicken’s diet to improve their overall health and productivity. To maintain hygiene and prevent diseases, she regularly sprays their shelter and ensures their feeding areas remain clean. She also vaccinates the chickens to protect them from infections. However, she faces a significant challenge many chicks die at a young age, leading to financial losses and difficulties in achieving her business goals.

Improved Product pricing skills

Most beneficiaries can set and adjust their prices based on prevailing market conditions. However, many women highlight fluctuating market prices as a major challenge, particularly for retail products. This unpredictability sometimes makes it difficult to establish stable prices, leading to potential losses. Nevertheless, they have managed to reduce these losses by gaining a better understanding of market trends and setting more accurate prices for their products.

Challenges & Risks

  • Eva who rears chicken as her business, she says she encounters a challenge of chicks dying when they are still young. In this way she makes losses and fail to meet her financial goals.
  • Beneficiaries with retail shops say they encounter a challenge of the fluctuating market prices. This is so common with products sold in the retail shops and in this way, some fail to set clear prices and end up making losses.
  • Eva also has a challenge of wild cats are eat her chicks, she there decided to cover all holes on her chicked house and leave a small space for entrance.

Next Steps &Recommendations

  • Strengthen loan repayment strategies, including flexible repayment plans.
  • Adopt technology solutions for easier loan application and tracking.
  • Expansion of the microloan program to other villages for growth and sustainability

Conclusion

In conclusion, the microloan Initiative continues to make a positive impact on small businesses and low-income entrepreneurs. Despite the challenges, the project remains on track, with strategic improvements planned for sustainability and growth.
