Empower 100 students' career success w/SkillsUSA

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the McKinley Educational Initiative, your donations were doubled, when a check for $5,000 was provided to support the students participating in SkillsUSA programs at MetroED. Above is a picture of Tim McKinley at the 2022 MetroED Car Show presenting the check to Peter Vrabel, President of the MetroED Foundation, with Alyssa Lynch, MetroED Superintendent, looking on. The Car Show also raised thousands of additional dollars in direct funds to MetroED to support SkillsUSA students. If you missed the Car Show, make sure you plan to attend in May of 2023, and have some fun while supporting MetroED.

As a result of this generosity, MetroED students from five different high schools and one young adult, representing four different categories of competition, were able to go to the National Leadership & Skills Conference held in person in Atlanta, GA June 20-24, 2022. The students were accompanied by SVCTE faculty -  SkillsUSA advisor Mr. Chukes (Autobody Refinishing) and faculty chaperone, Ms. Fleming (Dental Assisting). At this challenging national level, the quality of education at MetroED continued to shine as Isabella Johnson of Leland High School in the San Jose Unified School District won silver in Dental Assisting! Congratulations to her and her instructor, Ms. Fleming! Thank you, donors, for making this possible!

We are excited that Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) high school and adult students earned eleven medals at the SkillsUSA California State Leadership and Skill Conference held April 21-24 in Long Beach, CA. It was almost a sweep as the top SVCTE students won gold in five of six categories entered, and a silver in the sixth. Across the board, the fifteen SVCTE students participating were only surpassed by other SVCTE students, winning 5 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze.

This statewide success followed the 29 medals won at the Regional Competition, including 15 gold, 10 silver, and 4 bronze. We are very proud of all 38 SVCTE students who participated regionally, representing all six of our high school districts.

Student competitions were held in Basic Health Care Skills, Culinary Arts, Dental Assisting, First Aid CPR, Robotic Technology, Web Design, Welding Fabrication, and many others. Hands-on demonstrations, technical and leadership skills were exhibited online, including customer service, job interviews, and prepared speeches.

Carolina said, “It was a new experience that I’ve never tried before. Competing in a prestigious competition like SkillsUSA and winning gold made me very proud of myself.”

SVCTE Culinary student Bryce competed in the post-secondary competition as a high school student. Bryce said, “I feel confident, excited, and ready for the four-course meal I will be preparing at state!” Bryce won a gold at regionals and silver at state.

Thank you to all of our donors! Although the MetroED Foundation supports all the high school and adult learning programs at MetroED in San Jose, 100% of the money we receive from you through GlobalGiving goes to the student costs of participating in SkillsUSA local, state, and national competitions.
