Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Mykolaiv region has been one of the country's hardest-hit areas. Constant air strikes and bombings have devastated communities, leaving families without reliable electricity, running water, and a sense of safety. As winter temperatures dropped, Kidsave evacuated 22 children living in a shelter without electricity in Mykolaiv to the Kidsave Miracles Center in western Ukraine.
For these children, the Miracles Center became much more than a safe place to stay—it became a place where they could begin to heal.
After years of living with uncertainty and spending countless hours sheltering from attacks, the children finally had the opportunity to simply be kids again. Their days were filled with football matches, creative workshops, excursions, scavenger hunts, board games, evening movie nights, and other activities designed to bring joy back into their lives. Alongside the fun, Kidsave's team provided therapeutic programming to help the children process trauma, build resilience, and develop healthy relationships with one another.
At first, many of the children were understandably quiet and cautious. They had learned to protect themselves emotionally after experiencing so much loss and disruption. Over time, however, small moments of kindness—a hug, encouraging words, or simply someone taking the time to listen—began to rebuild their trust. Friendships formed, laughter returned, and children who had once withdrawn from others slowly found the confidence to participate and connect.
One child, Vlad, perfectly illustrates the power of a safe and caring environment. When he first arrived at the Miracles Center, he rarely spoke, avoided activities, and often pushed other children away. But beneath that guarded exterior was a bright, curious boy with a passion for learning about world history and Ukraine's remarkable people.
As the weeks passed, Vlad began joining games, contests, and group activities. He grew more comfortable around the other children and became an active participant in daily life at the Center. During the farewell celebration, after completing a Lego Eiffel Tower, he shared words that touched everyone around him:
"Paris is considered to be the city of love. And here at KMC we were treated with love."
Moments like these remind us why this work matters. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and surrounded by people who believe in them.
Perhaps the most meaningful outcome came after the children left the Miracles Center. Six children found loving, permanent families, and four were reunited with their biological families—returning not only to a home but to renewed hope, stability, and a sense of belonging.
