Mental Health among informal settlers in Nepal

PHASE Nepal, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving health, education, and livelihood opportunities in remote and disadvantaged communities of Nepal, has undertaken a significant research initiative through the ARISE Responsive Fund. This research focuses on understanding the unique challenges faced by people living in informal settlements in three major cities of Nepal: Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Bhaktapur.

Most people in informal settlements have poor living condition and face challenges in access to services, lack of social network and support; and accountability towards them. Our studies among informal waste workers, living in informal settlements, 27.4% found to have depressive symptoms. Despite high burden of mental health issues and the fact that a significant portion of this can be decreased by primary/secondary prevention, people in slum areas in Nepal do not have access to mental health.

We'll conduct an anti-stigma campaign to improve the delivery of mental health. Using educational tools like brochures and posters, we'll raise awareness, address misinformation, and offer insights into common mental disorders and management options. Our goal is to empower individuals, promote support, and encourage seeking proper mental health support.

Long-Term Impact

People living in informal settlements will be have awareness related to mental health. It can facilitate access to care, reduce stigma around mental health conditions, and promote early intervention. By doing so, we aim to improve the well-being and resilience of individuals and communities in the long run, leading to a more inclusive society for everyone.
