Challenge

In 2013, Rozaria Girls Clubs were launched in five rural secondary schools in Murewa, namely Magaya, Hurungwe, Chipinda, Kambarami and Chemapango. The question of menstrual hygiene became an immediate issue for the girls. They explored the range of issues from understanding your body, puberty, periods and self-confidence, health and personal care and assertiveness. This situation resulted in irregular school attendance and poor performance of girls in school, as well as lack of self confidence.

Solution

Through Rozaria Girls Clubs, the project seeks that 500 girls in rural five secondary shave access to menstrual health information, sanitary towels and peer support and mentorship, thereby increase their achievements in education and enhance their self esteem. It provides an opportunity for girls to learn about their bodies and their health. Provision of sanitary towels will address the practical needs of the girls who often use very unhygienic products like cloth, tissues or newspaper.

Long-Term Impact

The project will result in following long terms impacts: 1. Increased achievement in learning and education for 500 rural girls. 2. Health and self-esteem strengthened for girls for positive living and social engagement 3. Strengthened Rozaria Girls Clubs as safe spaces for information, learning and mentorships. 4. Model developed for replications in others schools in the district and in the country.
