MRA continues to make progress advancing research to understand the risk factors of melanoma among veteran populations, especially the rare melanoma subtypes acral, mucosal, and uveal melanoma. Over the last six months, MRA in partnership with scientists at the VA and Massachusetts General Hospital have assembled the largest retrospective cohort of veterans with melanoma. Our current VA cohort includes 51,000 veterans with cutaneous (skin) melanoma, and approximately 1850 with acral melanoma, 650 mucosal melanoma, and 350 uveal melanomas. Over the next few months of summer 2024, the team will analyze cohort of patients to better understand clinical, epidemiological, and environmental risk factors that might increase the risk for each of these types of melanomas.
