They have faced challenges that most of us can only imagine, but there is one battle they face that is on the rise and not often discussed: melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Military personnel and veterans are at a significantly higher risk of being diagnosed with melanoma compared to the general population. Over 90% of melanomas are caused by UV exposure from the sun. Our military personnel are often deployed to regions with intense sun and UV exposure.
The good news is that groundbreaking research is underway to improve treatment outcomes for our military heroes affected by melanoma. The Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) has joined forces with the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration to lead a remarkable research project focused on military and veterans' specific melanoma challenges.
