Peace Winds is helping the thousands of children who have fled across the border to Thailand for refuge at community schools after a February 2021 military coup against Myanmar's democratic government pushed the country into civil war. It is also working to provide a wide range of humanitarian support to families and children who are now caught up in one of the world's worst refugee crises.
More than 3 million people have fled indiscriminate attacks, airstrikes, and the Myanmar junta's Conscription Law. More and more parents are sending unaccompanied children across the border to Thailand for refuge at "migrant learning center" community schools. Despite heroic efforts by volunteer teachers and community leaders, these schools are now struggling with grossly inadequate sanitation, shockingly overcrowded dormitories, and an inability to provide students more than two meals a day.
Peace Winds has been supporting migrant learning centers by providing students with much needed hygiene and sanitary supplies. As part of a special back-to-school campaign, we are asking for donations to expand what we are providing to the schools. With your help, Peace Winds and our local partners will improve the living conditions of these students who are separated from their families and have faced so much adversity.
Myanmar's displaced people will need humanitarian support as long as the violence continues. By meeting some of the basic needs of children and their families, Peace Winds aims to help them stay safe and lay the foundations for them to recover when the fighting ends. Peace Winds staff members on the ground are working with local partners to support the migrant learning centers, with the aim of setting the students and their families up for success in the long run.
