Medical Aid Continues to Support Santiago Recovery

By Angela Garcia | Deputy Director

Santiago continues rebuilding
Santiago continues rebuilding

Thanks to generous donors like you, we have been able to send four tractor-trailer shipments of aid to
help Santiago recover from Hurricane Sandy. One of the first containers was packed full of health worker kits containing gloves, masks and other essential items, as well as flu vaccine kits, barrels of soap, and hospital linens.

After a disaster such as Hurricane Sandy, it is essential to donate only the materials that are needed and immediately usable. Our partners at the Pan American Health Organization and Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba http://medicc.org/ns/ as well as our other Cuban partners provide reliable assessments about conditions in Santiago to help us ensure that we only ship essential materials.

Once the immediate needs for basic supplies were met, Global Links began sending larger medical and office equipment to replace those destroyed by the storm. Stretchers, cribs, and surgical instruments, as well as desks and filing cabinets, were all dispatched just a few weeks after the hurricane.

The next shipment, planned for February, will go to the very badly damaged Psychiatric Hospital in
Santiago, which had to be evacuated after the storm. Global Links is providing beds and mattresses, as well as supplies for other hospitals and healthcenters in the region.

It will take a long time for Santiago to rebuild its healthcare system, but Global Links is committed to the effort. Please join us. Your support will make a big difference.
