Summary

This project is addressed to 15 children and young Romanian Roma immigrants living in Poland who for the first time in their lives have gained access to school but are not covered by insurance. Sight, hearing and posture defects are only examples of obstacles hindering learning and preventing the children from the full participation in the educational process. The project's aim is to give them access to health services and to supervise the treatment.

Challenge

Polish legislation do not recognize Roma immigrants from Romania and there are no systemic solutions for them. They have no access to employment, health services, housing and education. The community's income comes from scrap collection and begging which is done by women and children. This September 15 children living in two camps in Wroclaw/Poland enrolled in school. Dental hygiene and other health problems is the most burning issue which hinder learning and may result in droppings out.

Solution

The project will enable dental treatment for about 15 children. It will also allow to diagnose other health problems (e.g. posture, vision defects) which may have a negative impact on the course of education. Treatment of children is also important as a motivating factor for their parents, whose positive attitude to education is very important.

Long-Term Impact

General improvement of 15 children's health. Better assimilation of knowledge, greater progress in learning. Reduction of disparities between Polish and Roma children, which will allow for more effective integration. Reduction of the number of begging children.
