As 2021 progresses… the World, including Uganda, continue to determine what is a "normal" way of life. During these times the nursing students in the Education for Hope program have continued to be patient and determined to change their future through education.
In Uganda, the government decided to remove all students from their studies and close the Universities in March 2020.
The students from the Education for Hope program returned to the Kaberamaido community to assist with the COVID pandemic. Each student volunteered their time in the local communities and hospitals, to provide important COVID education and to assist with patient care.
Gradually the advanced students were allowed to return to school and complete their last semester to graduate with a Nursing or Midwifery Certificate. Three students graduated in December 2020, all three nurses are employed in the Uganda health care system. In March 2021, seven additional Education for Hope participants will graduate from a university with a Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery. The remaining 8 students returned to school to re-start their 2nd semester.
There is a great demand for healthcare professionals in Uganda.
The number of health personnel in Uganda is 1.49 per 1,000 population, critically below the WHO recommended a minimum of 2.3 per 1,000 population:
Health Worker H/W: Population ratio Density per 1,000 population
Nurses 1: 3,540 0.28 / 1,000
Midwives 1: 7,009 0.14 / 1,000
The Education for Hope program continues to grow and advance.
After 4 years of commitment, the Education for Hope Foundation has assisted, promoted, and supported theeducation of young people in Uganda. The program currently has 18 active participants, and the first three students have graduated and are actively employed. 7 additional students will graduate in March 2021. The Education for Hope program maintains a number of 20 students rotating through their studies at all times therefor 9 new students will enter the program in March 2021. There is a great need for the program as witnessed by the perpetual waitlist of 10-15 applicants anticipating for acceptance into the program.
The Education for Hope Foundation has increased the population of young adults furthering their education in thefield of nursing or midwifery. The fundamental result has improved the healthcare system in the country of Uganda and provided the opportunity to enrich and enhance lives through healthcare education in a nursingprofession.
The Education for Hope Foundation has increased the awareness of healthcare education and its’ importance tochange a community. Our plan is to continue to provide Hope through Education within the young population of Uganda, becauseeducation is the most effective means to truly break the cycle of poverty.
Encouraging all 2care 2change.
