Success! The Education for Hope program graduated 10 additional students with a Nursing Certificate or a Midwifery Certificate, in May 2021. Each graduate is working in the healthcare profession in Uganda. 9 new participants started the program in April 2021. We are currently providing an education for 20 students who are impacting the healthcare of a rural community with over 200,000 persons.
Currently the number of health personnel in Uganda is 1.4 per 1,000 population, critically below the WHO recommended a minimum of 2.3 per 1,000. Access to healthcare is limited, 12% of the population are within 5 km to the nearest health facility, increasing the need for rural care. In Kaberamaido only 6% of the individuals have completed an education level that equals a US High School degree. This project will improve healthcare services for 200,000 persons by providing a Nursing education.
Education for Hope provides funding for young adults to obtain a Nursing or Midwifery Certificate, a 2 year program in Uganda. In May of 2017, we started the program with three Nursing students, and two students in high school. This month our first students will graduate from a Certified Ugandan University. The students volunteer in the local healthcare facilities during their school breaks and the summer. They provide care to the rural areas by educating the community, and hold health clinics.
The fundamental result is to improve the healthcare system in the country of Uganda and provide the opportunity to enrich and enhance lives through healthcare education in a nursing profession. EfH supports the growth of health care services by increasing the quantity and quality of trained professional nurses in the Ugandan health care systems. The project will grow annually by 20 students. In 5 years we will have 100 students in a nursing program and impact over 200,000 persons in a rural area
