Maunga Primary School is located in the rural Maunga community comprising of 8 villages and a population of a bit over 3000. Family income levels in this area are low, and so many children are growing up surrounded by extreme poverty. Our aim is to increase the capacity of the school to offer higher learning possibilities for their pupils. The school is severely resource-limited with classes that are over-crowded and lacking educational materials.
Maunga School is the only school in the area of 8 villages, and needless to say, is stretched beyond its means to cater for such a large catchment area. 204 children are taught at this school by 6 teachers. The school is very under-resourced with old classrooms that are too small and cannot hold the number of students that need the class to learn. There is also a lack of teaching and learning materials such as text and exercise books. The students also have no IT knowledge which is a must today
No one chooses where they are born. We also know that breaking free from the chains of poverty is extremely hard. However, education may be the only chance these children have to try and break free. With more funds, the school may be better equipped to meet the needs of these children and inspire them to further education. We are also aiming to refurbish the existing classrooms, build a new classroom and build an IT section because IT is a highly valuable skill in today's environment.
Investing in the younger generation is never wasted as they are our future. Providing them with a decent education in an inspiring environment is the least we can do. If people are educated they are more likely to be employable - and if people are employed and can feed their families they are more likely to care about what goes on around them - such as caring for the environment and the animals around them. This will be beneficial not only for themselves but for Livingstone, Zambia.
