This project, supported by Business for Better Society and led by humanitarian Celine Cousteau, will provide high quality education for 150 children from Ambohimader village in rural Madagascar. The aim of the project is to create a sustainable source of food for the student's nutrition and a revenue stream to pay for the teachers' salaries. It will plant fruit trees, a vegetable garden and build an egg business. It will also update the cafeteria and build new hygenic toilet facilities.
Families in Ambohimader are mainly farmers who have a poor standard of living, and educational attainment. Naturally, they want better prospects for their children. Their village secondary school, set up in 2012, is run by the founder Pastor Eugenie and is in danger of closing because her funds are running out. Without this school, children will drop out at Grade 3 because the nearest secondary school is a 20km roundtrip daily walk. Without education the villagers will remain in poverty.
This project will provide the resources to grow fruits and vegetables on the school land and build a viable egg production operation. These resources will feed the children, whose parents can't afford to feed them and keep them in school. Plus they'll learn about valuable husbandry and produce, supplying life skills for the betterment of their families. The extra produce and eggs will create a revenue stream to pay for the teachers' salaries and help guarantee the school's future.
The village school will become self-reliant and able to provide its students with the best learning environment including facilities and optimal nutrition. By extending education to approximately 150 students annually, the school will give them the opportunity to take on skilled roles within the community that will help lift the village and future generations out of poverty.
