Summary

This project aims to plant 200,000 mangrove trees, and install 300 bee hives and will: (1). Conduct educational and training activities within the target area focused on linking the importance of biodiversity conservation and management. (2). Promote the development of environmentally friendly activities such as mangrove-linked apiculture, plant nurseries and eco-tourism with and within the local community (3). Establish and develop local capacity to protect the environment.

Challenge

The Keta/Anlo Ramsar wetland faces severe mangrove deforestation from over-harvesting, causing coastal erosion, soil hyper-salinization, and depleted fish populations. This environmental crisis directly threatens the food security and survival of over 100,000 coastal residents, primarily affecting local fishermen, farmers, and women traders who rely entirely on these natural resources for their daily income. Restoring this ecosystem stabilizes shorelines and secures local livelihoods.

Solution

The project restores degraded mangroves in the Keta/Anlo Wetland to rebuild vital fish nurseries and carbon sinks. By creating Community Resource Management Areas, the Bedzsmith Foundation International Inc empowers locals to enforce sustainable harvesting laws. Additionally, the initiative introduces eco-friendly livelihoods-such as climate-smart aquaculture and eco-tourism-to directly alleviate poverty and reduce destructive economic pressure on remaining natural habitats.

Long-Term Impact

This project by Bedzsmith Foundation International Inc delivers key long-term benefits: (1). Eco-Restoration: Restores critical mangrove forests and protects rich coastal biodiversity. (2). Climate Resilience: Creates natural barriers against rising sea levels, storm surges, and shoreline erosion. (3). Carbon Storage: Locks away massive amounts of blue carbon to fight global climate change. (4). Economic Security: Boosts local incomes through sustainable fishing, ecotourism, and green jobs.
