Afrika Tikkun serves the most marginalized communities in South Africa affected by Apartheid. Most often this translates to efforts to serve women, mothers and their children, in particular, as well as their families in general. One of our main goals is to educate, empower and develop young people, especially women, to become powerful and self-sufficient agents of positive change in their own communities. One of our programs that does that is, Young Urban Woman Project-- a leadership and self-led human rights advocacy program of our organization.
Gabrielh, is a Young Urban Woman who is working for sexual and reproductive health rights of women. Gabrielh and her single mother have endured incredible hardships in the South African township where they live. Irrespective of all the barriers she had to surmount, Gabrielh has blossomed into a leader of other women and in her community. Teen Voices recently published a piece about what she and her fellow YUW members are doing to address teenage pregnancy-- a disturbing phenomenon preventing girls from finishing school in South Africa.
