Afrika Tikkun serves the most marginalized communities in South Africa affected by Apartheid. Most often this translates to efforts to serve women, mothers and their children, in particular, as well as their families in general. One of our main goals is to educate, empower and develop young people, especially women, to become powerful and self-sufficient agents of positive change in their own communities. One of our programs that does that is, Young Urban Woman Project-- a leadership and self-led human rights advocacy program of our organization.
Gabrielh, is a Young Urban Woman who is working for sexual and reproductive health rights of women. Gabrielh and her single mother have endured incredible hardships in the South African township where they live. Irrespective of all the barriers she had to surmount, Gabrielh has blossomed into a leader of other women and in her community. Teen Voices recently published a piece about what she and her fellow YUW members are doing to address teenage pregnancy-- a disturbing phenomenon preventing girls from finishing school in South Africa.

Your support has enabled Gabrielh to evolve from being a recipient of Afrika Tikkun's services to becoming a beacon of hope in her community. We thank you for joining us in making a difference in the lives of young people like Gabrielh, who are #LivingMandelasLegacy by advocating for human rights and social justice, as are you. To quote Nelson Mandela, Our Patron in Chief in Memorium, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
Afrika Tikkun creates innovative and sustainable solutions for the women we serve. Your generous contribution has allowed us to empower young women in many ways, such as:
- Providing necessary resources to our female beneficiaries to access employment and educational opportunities
- Increasing civic participation of women and mobilizing them to address the challenges affecting them.
On behalf of our 20,000+ beneficiaries, we thank you for your generous contribution and hope that with your continued support, we will be able to empower more young girls like Gabrielh.
