Save 1000 children from Malnutrition in rural Sind

For a parent, there is no greater heartache than watching your child’s health deteriorate. For Papo, a daily-wage laborer from Chilya,  rural Sindh, that heartache was a daily reality. His two-year-old son Ibraheem, was not the energetic toddler he should have been. Instead of running and playing, Ibraheem was quiet, his small body gripped by the exhaustion of acute malnutrition.

When Ibraheem first came to our attention during a community screening, he weighed a mere 7.2 kg. His Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) was only 12 cm - a frightening reflection of how much his body was struggling to survive. To his loved ones, Ibraheem didn’t just look thin; he looked fragile, like a light that was slowly dimming.

The journey toward recovery began the moment Ibraheem was enrolled in our Malnutrition program. But healing a child requires more than just clinical intervention; it requires a circle of support. While Ibraheem was started on Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), our team focused on the family, providing the counseling and emotional reassurance that Papo Sheikh and his wife so desperately needed.

Over the next several months, Ibraheem attended seven consecutive follow-up visits. Each visit was a milestone. Our staff measured his weight, cheered for his progress, guided his caregivers on hygiene and nutrition, and walked alongside the family through every moment of uncertainty.

Slowly, the lethargy that had defined Ibraheem’s life began to lift. The transformation was visible not just in the numbers - though his weight climbed to 8.4 kg and his MUAC reached a healthy 12.9 cm, but in the spark that returned to his eyes.

Today, the fear that once followed Ibraheem’s  father to work every day has been replaced by a profound sense of relief.

"When my child was weak, we were very worried and did not know what to do," Papo recalls, his voice filled with emotion. "After receiving treatment and guidance, my son’s health has improved a lot. The staff supported us at every visit and explained everything clearly. We are very thankful for this treatment, which gave our child a new life."

Ibraheem’s recovery is a reminder that when quality healthcare is met with deep empathy and consistent community support, we can do more than just treat a condition - we can restore a childhood. 

When seven-month-old Kainat was first brought to SHINE’s clinic on a warm September morning, she was quiet and far too fragile for a baby her age. While other infants her age were beginning to sit up and explore the world with curiosity, Kainat lacked the energy to even hold her head high. Her father, Saeed Ahmed, watched with growing anxiety as his daughter seemed to grow smaller each day. At her first assessment, the numbers confirmed the family's deepest fears: her weight was a mere 4.6 kg, and her mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measured just 11.2 cm. Kainat was diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnourished (SAM), a critical state that meant her very survival depended on immediate intervention.

For the next few months, the clinic became a second home for Kainat and her family. The journey was not just about the specialized nutritional support she received; it was about the steady, unwavering partnership between the medical team and her family. Week after week, through consistent follow-up visits, the staff provided more than just treatment - they provided the emotional reassurance and counseling that gave Saeed and his family the confidence to persevere. They learned the nuances of nutritional care and the vital importance of every single meal, turning their worry into a disciplined path toward healing.

Slowly, the change began to take hold. The lethargy that had defined Kainat’s first months of life began to lift, replaced by a bright-eyed alertness. By late December, the fragile infant who had arrived a few months ago had been replaced by a thriving little girl. Her weight had climbed to 6.4 kg, and her MUAC had reached a healthy 13.4 cm. On the 22nd of December, Kainat was officially declared recovered. The recovery of Kainat is a celebration of what is possible when early intervention meets the relentless commitment of a family. She is no longer just a statistic in our Malnutrition Program; she is a vibrant, growing child whose future has been restored.

For Saeed Ahmed and his family, Kainat’s health is the greatest gift imaginable - a reminder that with consistent care and a community that refuses to give up, even the most critical situations can turn into stories of strength.
