Progress in Getting Food to Market
![]()
It's hard to focus on the myriad of issues that affect the environment. Climate affects food production, and the world is at a critical moment. Climate change, population growth, and global food-system disruptions create immense pressure on the world's food supply.
Yet, Africa has the potential to not only feed itself, but to become a net food exporter. There are 33 million small-scale or smallholder farms, and in some African countries, they produce up to 90% of the food consumed. Most smallholders are often subsistence farmers, without the resources and networks they need to adapt to social, economic or climate shocks. The challenges they face are multiplied in isolation. Disconnected from infrastructure, markets, and technology, they lack the support to grow their livelihoods. When rains took out rural roads, Joshua Machinga of Common Ground for Africa saw that an answer was to get large road-building equipment to make a huge difference in rural roads allowing people to go to market, etc.
This is a huge help to the farmers you have been supporting. None of the donations from you went to the equipment, so you are still supporting small shareholder farmers working on sustainable farming. It's a good time to continue your support. Getting produce to market will support farmers to grow more crops, produce more eggs and go full speed ahead.
With your help and the amazing leadership of Joshua Machinga for over 30 years, we invite you to jump in to support families and support sustainable food production..
