What can you do to combat Climate Change?

By Shana Greene | Co-Executive Director/Village Volunteers

We don't expect individuals to have a huge impact planting trees but what if we planted thousands of trees in an area that has been deforested and desertified? If you live in a city or suburb and don't have access to thousands of acres, reforesting and reclaiming acres farmed in the Rift Valley can be your legacy. We always say, "Trees planted anywhere help everyone". This effect on the environment will alleviate poverty in a myriad of ways by educating farmers in regenerative farming that brings back fertile land from desertification.

In our program, seeds are saved and shared, trees are planted, and soil is retained and built through composting organic material.  Farmers and women with home gardens learn to increase yields to feed their families but also to take to market to sell or trade. Women with only a rooftop to farm learn to garden in bags and can yield enough food to feed their families.

Planting trees restores ecosystems that have been degraded. Agroforestry is a method of planting trees on farmlands so crops benefit from shade from the scorching sun. Training farmers in starting tree nurseries, sustainable farming techniques, and education on holistic, sustainable environmental restoration alleviates poverty and educates on sequestering carbon dioxide to combat climate change.

That's not a small task but with the help of community organic farmers and you, we are able to support and spread the information far and wide. Planting trees is one thing...planting seeds of knowledge is another.

Thank you,
