Empower 170 Malawian Girls to FINISH School

It’s that time of year again… We are officially gearing up for our biggest annual fundraiser, the Tri for Malawi Team Challenge! This year, the event will take place on Sunday September 7^th in West Potomac Park, Washington D.C.

In partnership with the Nation’s Tri, our athletes will swim, bike, and run through Washington D.C.’s monument corridor to forever change the lives of 170 girls living in poverty in rural Malawi. The Ambassador from the Republic of Malawi to the United States, His Excellency Steve Matenje, will join our athletes once again to honor our girls who walk a triathlon-sized distance to go to school every week! Last year, Malawian Ambassador Steve Matenje and his Deputy Chief of Mission cycled 50 kilometers and ran 10 kilometers, respectively, to raise funds for AGE Africa and demonstrate their and the Malawi Government’s support for AGE Africa’s efforts.

AGE Africa is pleased to report that we added 3 new schools to our scholarship program at the end of 2013, bringing us to a total of

• 150 students recieiving scholarships in 10 schools and 7 districts within Malawi
• Over 550 girls participating in our critical life skills and career guidance curriculum (CHATS)
• 20 students accessing higher education, such as University and Teacher Training College
• 40 alumne trained as CHATS educators to mentor girls at home in their villages

As AGE Africa continues to grow in 2014, we have set a goal of providing 170 scholarships to forever change the lives of 170 girls living in poverty in rural Malawi!

We also recognize that our opportunity for systemic change lies with our unique life skills and career guidance curriculum which is high-impact but low-cost to implement. In conjunction with Malawi’s Ministry of Education, we have launched an initiative in 2014, called GirlsCHAT, that pilots our CHATS (Creating Healthy Approaches to Success) curriculum at 6 rural, community day secondary schools in Zomba and Machinga Districts. GirlsCHAT offers AGE Africa’s two-year life skills and career guidance curriculum to over 400 girls. Rigorous monitoring and evaluation of the GirlsCHAT pilot will provide an evidence base to build scale and influence the national curriculum review and reform process through advocacy for a more equitable and girl-friendly life-skills curriculum nationwide.
