Since 1998, Go Green Toy Foundation has directly tackled two very important issues in the Dominican Republic: environment and poverty. Our model is directed towards creating and repurposing toys for low income kids through the use of recycled materials. This has expanded to tutorials, trainings and seminars, so that these kids can be educated regarding environmental preservation. Funds collected will be used to educate kids, get storage space for donations and materials to produce the toys.
Help has been difficult and resources scarce. We get occasional support on the spot from people in neighborhoods but mostly people do not see volunteering as beneficial. When we first started we knew that our focus had to be on the younger generations and in a way that makes recycling cool. It works!
@goGTF (Fundacion go Green Toy) provides education to teachers, children in need and the general public by means of talks and training, prepared kits and green products made from recyclable materials. Adults are taught about climate change, environmental protection and recycling to share their new knowledge with their families, friends and neighborhood.
We have already seen the benefits of our work: kids' self esteem goes through the roof with our workshops, they see it is ok to make their own toys. Our programs are based on art and play therapy and focus on the problem: a culture of consumption that links self worth with material possession. Our programs help children and adults get insight and work inwards to understand the issues at hand and shape them so they can shape others. We believe millions of people are impacted by this crisis.
