As part of our work to close the digital divide and develop skills for the future of Mexicans, Fundacion Proacceso held on December 18 the second edition of the Robotic Fest at Microsoft headquarters Mexico.
A total of 53 robotics projects were presented in three categories, classified by age, in which 120 children and young users participated from 24 centers of the Innovation and Learning Network (RIA) and Digital Libraries from State of Mexico, one of the most marginalized regions from the country considering crime and low access to quality education.
The works required the knowledge of coding with the support of Arduino electronic cards, motion sensors, as well as automated functions, and were designed and produced in 3D printers and lasser cutters. In addition, the robots focused on solving specific problems from their communities, such as caring for the environment through recycling, the intelligent use of energy for homes, support for handicap people and ways to avoid stealing.
The jury was composed of several institutions who evaluated, discussed and chose a winners in terms of the problem solving, the technical approach and the creativity and originality. The winners of the contest received donations such as X-BOX 360 videogames by Microsoft and digital devices by AG Electronics, like headphones and horns.
All the boys and girls were very excited to participate and showed the effort that represented the ideas that brought life their proyects, and also what meant the developing the automatization, coding and design. We had the opportunity to see how are they concerned about the environmental challenges, like reusing plastic, water to generate energy and to help people with different capabilities.
Since 2015, this project has benefit more than 2,853 children and young people to create prototypes and projects that help them to solve real problems in their communities and, in a future, they could start a business or entrepreneurment with this knowledge to have a better future.
