Summary

This project will rebuild 5 classrooms for the Ganga Primary School in the extremely remote community of Maheswori in eastern Nepal. Children and teachers have been forced to exist in unsafe buildings since the 2015 earthquake. This school is the only option for primary education for 66 households and the community's pleas for help since 2015 have been ignored by the government, other NGOs. dZi will rebuild the classrooms using the latest technology for earthquake-resistant design.

Challenge

The remote community of Maheswori was seriously impacted by the 2015 earthquake. Since then, Maheswori has struggled to find money & resources to repair & maintain the only primary school for this community. Teachers and students are forced to continue education in unsafe buildings which make them vulnerable in monsoon season or to another natural disaster. Children are more likely to drop out of school if conditions are not safe. COVID-19 has also impacted school drop out rates.

Solution

Maheswori asked for our partnership in rebuilding rooms in the school. dZi has worked with many communities in eastern Nepal for 20+ years to build new schools as well as repair damage from the 2015 earthquake. dZi staff will train local masons to build using earthquake-safe designs. New interlocking brick technology will be used to rebuild the school rooms. dZi will also build toilets, drinking water stations and furniture for the school so teachers and students can feel safe again.

Long-Term Impact

dZi works to directly address poverty and isolation endemic to the remote communities we serve. This project will ensure 66 current households have a quality primary school for their children to attend - along with future generations. Parents will no longer be afraid to send their children to school. A safer and better learning environment will improve education quality for all. The community will benefit economically from the use of local resources and employment of skilled and unskilled labor.
