Sharing story of one such child who was gifted with a new smile.

Pathan is the 2nd child of Salman and Aisha daily laborers in a small village in India. With your support, we were able to operate Pathan and repair his cleft lip as early as 7months from birth.  Parents believe treating him early will surely help their child to be as normal as other children and he will be saved all trauma and harassment faced by a cleft child in Schools and society here. They said they want their kid to study and become an officer. On asked Officer were, His father replied with a smile that Only officer is good for them. Laughs!

We again thank you for supporting us.

Thanks

Eman’s birth brought immense joy to his parents but when they saw his face they felt their hearts drop. His beautiful face had been marred by a cleft lip. The new parents were worried how their family would react.

Eman’s extended family, however, were surprisingly welcoming. His grandmother consoled his parents saying that God does not make any one perfect; He always sends us with some flaws so that we remain humble. Eman’s parents were relieved upon hearing this. The community at large also welcomed the child, and many of them even offered home-remedy tips to his mother to fix his lips. She tried several of them, before she realised that nothing was going to fix her child’s face unless God Himself wished it. Even though everyone welcomed the child, she feared for his acceptance once he grew up and started attending school and prayed daily for a miracle.

Her prayers were answered   when she found out about the free surgery and cleft care offered by Mission Smile. She travelled more than 100kms to bring her child to us. Upon arrival Eman was examined and selected for surgery. Post surgery, his mother was very happy with her baby’s transformation and she thanked God for sending Mission Smile to work this miracle in their life.

Rahul high-fives his father before his surgery

Rahul is a sprightly and naughty 11-year-old boy like any boy his age. He is pampered by everyone at home, especially his sisters and his father. Even though he is very naughty his father never scolds him. But, his world is confined within the four walls of his house because of his cleft lip and palate. When he steps out of his house he is ridiculed and mocked.

School is a challenge for him. He is often not allowed to answer in class because his cleft palate renders his speech nasal and incomprehensible. In the playground his classmates bully him and call him a failure because he’s 11 and in class II. But, Rahul does not give up trying to make friends even though he often returns home with bruises and tears. He asks his father why he is so different. His father’s eyes would well up with tears and he prayed for a miracle that would change his child’s life.

Rahul’s father, Kiran, is a daily-wage labourer who makes less than $60 USD a month. He wants his children to achieve everything that he could not. He sends all his children to school so that they can have better opportunities. He was worried that Rahul would not be able to adjust in school with his condition so he deferred sending him to school until he was older.

He did not know that Rahul’s condition can be corrected through surgery; even if he knew, affording it was beyond his wildest dreams. It seemed like divine intervention to Kiran when the local Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakaram (RBSK) informed him about Mission Smile’s free cleft surgery mission.

Kiran immediately brought his son to our camp. Rahul was screened and found fit for surgery. Before going into surgery the scared but also excited Rahul quipped, “Next week when I go back to school no one will recognize me. I can’t wait to see my face after this…I will look so handsome!”

When Rahul came out of the OT, his father was overjoyed seeing his face. Gone was the gash between his lips that made his son different from the other kids. He was happy that his little darling could now eat properly and become a strong and healthy boy. He also believes that things will change for his precious son after the surgery. This miracle would not have happened without your generosity and support, and Rahul and his father thanks everyone who came forward to change his life.

Dear Smile Givers,

Please accept our immense gratitude for the overwhelming response that this campaign has received.

We are humbled to receive over 300 Donations from across the world to help us in providing needed Cleft surgeries to 100 needy children born with Cleft. All your contributions – small and big- helped us collect a total of USD 35,000. Thank you so much for it.

We have utilized the donation for supporting surgeries at our centre and bringing smiles to 100 of children. Without your support, these children and their parents could not have afforded the much-needed surgery and care. They received not only the surgery but also other related care- the stay and travel for the family, Ward Medicines, Discharge Medicines, speech and dental check-up totally free of cost because of your support.

Also, we have seen a huge turn around the number in followup camps, with more than 8 in every 10 children turning up for post-operative. We would like to extend our thank you to each one of our donors personally and would request you to keep supporting us on our Mission of Cleft free India.

Thank You

Sad Ummera not sure about what future holds..

Dear Smile Givers

When life closes a door, it usually opens a window! Ummera’s story has inspired us to go extra miles! Her case is one of the most challenging cases of facial deformities we ever witnessed!

It’s not just a cleft lip or palate occurring in a child, which we’re usually accustomed dealing with, but a congenital facial deformity which has kept deteriorating with age, as if slowly choking the life out of the unfortunate teenage girl! Yet the resolute teenager is putting up a brave fight. We too are determined to join Ummera in her fight to reclaim a normal life, no matter what it takes!

Ummera is a teenage girl from a poor family of rural West Bengal. During our visit to her home, she started narrating her hardships. She said that since birth, she had a minor facial deformity. Her family took her to the hospital for medical examination. The doctor advised a surgical procedure. But due to lack of funds, the unfortunate family could not afford her treatment cost at that time. The result was grave for the child!

Her condition started worsening with the passing years. The facial deformity started deteriorating with the development of a lump of tissue covering one side of her face entirely, including her one eye! Ummera had tremendous pain in that eye. Her deformity was not just external, but internally too it had spread to larynx and pharynx, causing immense pain to the teenage girl. But her pain didn’t just end with that!

Apart from her physical trauma, Ummera is a victim of mental trauma as well caused as a result of ill-treatment and social ostracisation by the school teacher, classmates and even close members of the community. She was being looked upon as someone cursed and born with bad luck. Such was the notion among her peers that mere socializing with her will carry forward her bad luck to them! Thus, away went her dream of studying at school! Depressed and fate struck, Ummera kept herself confined to household chores. Her misery and hardship are beyond words!

Owing to the financial crisis at home, in spite of all her pain, the teenage girl nowadays works as a domestic help to support her family. Both her parents were in tears while narrating their daughter’s struggle during all these years! They were tired having run from pillar to post for financial help for their daughter’s treatment but didn’t receive a single positive response till date. Dejected and hopeless they surrendered their daughter’s future to destiny!

Destiny, however, had own plans! Somehow we came to know about Ummera and we went to her home and met her parents. Seeing her and hearing about her ordeal, we ourselves could feel the excruciating pain of the teenager and decided at that moment to support her irrespective of what it costs us.

Ummera’s aggravated condition of the facial deformity was is proof enough to suggest that she needs multiple surgical procedures. Naturally, the cost to be incurred would be much more than a regular cleft surgery but we’re determined to gift Ummera a new life!

So going beyond our usual pledge we have embarked on a mission to bring smiles to Ummera & her family! Presently, she had undergone her first surgery and is doing well. We will be closely monitoring her and bringing you updates related to her surgery and transformation. Pray for her speedy recovery. Support us and stay connected for more updates.

Thank you for your genrous that gives us the courage to take on difficult cases. We appeal to you to become our regular donor.

Thank you for making a difference in Ummera's Life.
