Rescue Maasai Girls from Female Genital Mutilation

Today is a very special day for Global Roots and for a young woman whose life could have taken a very different pat

On September 16, 2026, Sarah N. began her college journey at Kenya Medical Training College, where she will pursue a Diploma in Public Health.

Sarah finished high school in 2025 with a mean grade of B+. Today, she has taken another important step toward the future she once could only dream about.

For those who have supported our FGM Zero Project, Sarah's story may be familiar.

Several years ago, Sarah was a young Maasai girl facing the threat of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). On the night she was supposed to be cut, she made a brave decision.

She climbed out of her bedroom window and ran. She ran to her elementary school because she believed it was the one place where she would be safe.

Fortunately, one of her teachers found her at the school and took her in. The teacher cared for Sarah for several months before contacting our Safehouse Manager, Mary K.

After our team completed its checks, Sarah was brought to our Safe House, where she could live safely and continue her education.

There was still danger. Sarah's father later sent two men to take her back. They were stopped by the Safe House security team, and Sarah remained under our protection.

We then helped her enter a boarding school, and that was the beginning of a very different future.

Sarah's Future Changed

Today, Sarah is no longer the frightened young girl who ran through the night looking for somewhere safe.

She is a college student. She has chosen to study Public Health, a field that will allow her to serve other people and contribute to her community.

Sarah told us how much her life has changed and what she believes might have happened if she had not been rescued.

“I am grateful to Global Roots for giving me a chance to stay in school. If I had not been rescued, I do not know where I would be today. I may have been forced to undergo FGM and leave school. My life could have been very different. Now I am in college, and I want to build a good future and help other people.”

For us, these words are a powerful reminder of why protecting one girl matters. When Sarah came to us, the goal to keep her safe and keep her in school. But education did more than that.

It gave Sarah time to grow, to make her own decisions, to discover what she wanted to do with her life, and to believe that her future belonged to her.

From Protection to Opportunity

Sarah's journey also shows why our work cannot end when a girl is rescued from immediate danger.

Keeping girls safe from FGM is the first step. Keeping them in school gives them the opportunity to build independent lives. Sarah has now reached college, but she is not the only girl reaching this important stage.

We have several other young women in our program who have completed or are completing high school and are preparing to begin college. For girls who have spent years overcoming the threat of FGM, reaching higher education is a major achievement.

But college comes with new costs. Tuition, accommodation, books, transport, food, and other basic needs can become barriers for girls who have already fought so hard to stay in school.

We want to help these young women continue.

Sarah's story began with a girl running away from danger. Today, it is the story of a young woman walking into college to begin a career in Public Health.

That is what your support can make possible. There are more girls behind Sarah who are waiting for their own chance to take this next step. They have worked hard in school. They have passed their exams. They have dreams for their lives.

Now they need support to continue their education.

We hope you will continue walking with these girls as they move from secondary school into college and toward independent lives.

Because of you, Sarah is not looking back at the life she escaped. She is looking forward. And today, September 16, 2026, she took another step toward the future she chose for herself.
