By Mary Keruto | FGM Zero Safehouse Manager
Dear Supporters,
We are grateful to share another update from our FGM Zero Project in Kenya. Your support helps us keep girls in our program safe and in school.
As schools continue with the academic year, we remain committed to keeping girls protected from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early marriage, and other pressures that often force them to leave school too soon.
Right now, all the girls under our care are safe and attending school. In the coming weeks, they will return home briefly for the mid-term break in June. While this break is shorter than the long December holiday, it is still a time when some girls become vulnerable, especially those returning to difficult home situations.
Our team is already staying in close contact with families, schools, and local leaders to make sure the girls remain safe during the holiday period and can return to school without interruption.
Sarah and Naomi Take the Next Step
We are especially proud to share an exciting milestone from two girls you have walked alongside for several years: Sarah N. and Naomi K.
Last year, both girls completed high school successfully. Today, they are waiting for the outcome of their college and university applications through Kenya’s Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). Admissions are based on merit, and placement results are expected before September.
For girls who once faced the threat of FGM and early marriage, this moment is extraordinary.
A few years ago, continuing school felt almost impossible for them. Today, they are applying for higher education and preparing for the next chapter of their lives. Their journey is proof that protection, education, and encouragement truly change lives.
Naomi recently shared this message with our team:
“I used to think my future had already been decided for me. Now I believe I can become someone and help other girls also stay in school.”
Her words remind us why this work matters so deeply.
A Story of Courage
One of the younger girls in our program, Lucy, is currently in secondary school and doing well in her studies.
Lucy joined the program after she attended our anti-FGM outreach last December. At home, there was growing pressure for her to leave school and prepare for marriage. She became withdrawn and afraid, unsure if anyone would help her.
After connecting with our outreach team, Lucy received support and help returning to school safely. Today, her teachers say she has become more confident and active in class again.
Recently, she told one of our staff members:
“When I came back to school, I felt like I could breathe again.”
Why Your Support Matters
Protecting girls is not a one-time event. It requires constant follow-up, trusted relationships, and quick action when danger appears.
Your support helps us stay connected to girls throughout the school year. It helps cover emergency transport, school support, counseling, outreach activities, and safe care when needed.
Most importantly, it gives girls hope that they are not alone.
In communities where many girls still face pressure to undergo FGM or marry early, education becomes more than learning. It becomes protection, freedom, and a path toward a different future.
Because of you, girls who once lived in fear are now sitting in classrooms, preparing for exams, applying for college, and dreaming again.
Thank you for continuing to stand with us and with the brave girls we serve. Your compassion is changing lives.
With gratitude,
The FGM Zero Team
