Show Annabelle Some Love- Mother of the Year!

By Jessica Roberts | Treasurer

The last few months have been very busy here at Dixie Adoptables. We have taken in over 20 dogs (mostly puppies) and 25 cats and kittens.  In amongst all the fluff and cuteness is the story of an AMAZING mama cat, Annabelle.

Annabelle was hit by a car and severely injured. She was found dragging herself across a road to a ditch in a desperate attempt to reach her 2 day old babies. She was missing her front left paw, and her back left foot was severely damaged, but miraculously, her x-rays showed no internal injuries. Despite all of this, her only thought was of her children that she loved. Our vet is waiting to surgically remove her back foot until her kittens are old enough to be without her. This means we have to keep her foot free from infection until that happens. We clean her foot and change her dressing twice a day and check in on her throughout the day to make sure she is comfortable and she keeps the wrap on her foot.  Managing her discomfort and likely pain is a challenge since she is a nursing mom.

She seems grateful for the care, and is the most loving caring mother. She has nursed these babies without failure though this whole thing. They are now 4 weeks old, and are some of the healthiest chubby babies we have ever seen. We believe Annabelle should be "Mother of the Year" and we hope you will consider donating to show her some love and support for her continuing medical care. We are not sure if she will need assistance once her back foot is amputated considering she took damage to both of her left feet. We will have to wait until her surgery and she is able to fully heal.

Dixie Adoptables doesn't shy away from caring for animals with special needs or injuries. Our director personally took in a litter of 5 kittens with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a condition where the cerebellum (the part of the brain that coordinates movement) doesn’t develop properly. They are lovingly known as "wobbly kitties". These babies have grown up in a loving well padded environment, they continue to thrive and are some of the most determined cats you will meet! Three of the five have found loving homes so far. We will wait until we find the right home for the final two, it is important to find a good match in any adoption, but we take extra care in finding a match for our special needs animals. We are so thankful to every adopter, but those that are willing to take in a special needs animal, are special as well.

We have also been blessed to care for a sweet dog named Matilda (baby girl), who was hit by an automobile and had multiple wounds and fractures. She has healed up so nicely, and has also just completed her heartworm treatment. She is adopted and will be going home next month.

There are so many wonderful animals in need at any given time, and without your support, we couldn't continue to care for so many animals, especially the ones with serious injuries and special needs. Thank you so much for your support.
