Learners Awaiting Maths & Science Extra Tuition

Over the past year, United Way South Africa (UWSA) delivered a powerful and life-changing STEM Education Programme across three provinces, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Gauteng, reaching thousands of learners with extra academic support, mentorship, and resources in Mathematics and Science.

Where We Worked

The programme supported seven high-need public schools:

KwaZulu-Natal

  • Clairwood Secondary School

Limpopo

  • Tetema Secondary School
  • Nkakabidi Secondary School
  • Kgati Ya Moshate Secondary School

Gauteng

  • Tembisa West Secondary School
  • Ivory Park Secondary School
  • Ingqayizivele Secondary School

Key Interventions

UWSA delivered:

  • Extra Maths & Science Tuition (after-school, weekends, and school holidays)
  • Tutoring partnerships (e.g., GoMaths)
  • Study materials & resources
  • Technology-based learning (STEM tablets pilot at Ivory Park Secondary)
  • Motivational talks, career guidance & mental health workshops
  • Meals & transport support for learners attending extra classes

This holistic approach ensured that learners not only improved academically but also gained confidence, resilience, and clarity about future career paths.

Impact Highlights

KwaZulu-Natal – Clairwood Secondary

  • Maths performance improved by 76%.
  • School targeting 100% pass rate in Maths & Science.
  • One learner, Bevan Thomas, now studies engineering at UKZN after earning distinctions.

Limpopo

Tetema Secondary

  • Improved dramatically, rising to #2 in the district academically.

Kgati Ya Moshate Secondary

  • Science pass rate: 65% → 100%
  • Maths: 13% → 72%
  • Learners are showing exceptional motivation and pride.

Nkakabidi Secondary

  • Learners demonstrated large mid-year improvements through consistent extra classes.
  • Students reported increased confidence and better understanding of STEM subjects.

Gauteng

Ivory Park Secondary

  • Rolled out a STEM digital learning pilot using tablets pre-loaded with curriculum content.
  • Learners showed higher engagement and improved digital literacy.

Ingqayizivele & Tembisa West

  • Strong improvement trends in internal assessments.
  • Learners benefited from ongoing tutoring, mental health support, and career exposure.

Overall Outcomes

  • Pass rates in Maths and Science improved across all partner schools.
  • Some schools achieved 100% pass rates in key subjects for the first time.
  • Learners developed stronger academic foundations, improved confidence, and greater interest in STEM careers.
  • Communities, teachers, and parents report renewed hope and pride in learners’ achievements.
  • The programme reached over 1,000 students, helping break barriers to quality education.

Conclusion

United Way South Africa’s STEM programme is transforming educational outcomes in underserved communities. Through donor support, learners are gaining the academic tools, confidence, and opportunities needed to pursue brighter futures in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
