Project Report | Dec 5, 2023
December 2023 Report

By Erik Andrulis | President and Executive Director

Thank you for supporting our project "Help Low Income MD-VA-DC Area Get Veterinary Care."

This represents the 7th report for this project.  All prior project reports we have provided a numerical summing up of the animals served and treated through our low-income project.  This report is going to mix that up and create a new tradition: we areselecting a story from those we have accumulated throughout the year and share it with you here.

Every year, we reflect back on the animals that have been helped because of your financial support. Here's a story of an animal that your donations saved!

Saving Pepsi is better than Coke

Hey, we saved a life yesterday. (And helped a very worried dog mom not lose her beloved pup).
Our staff received a frantic call about an older dog, Pepsi, in distress.  The owner informed us that a pet ER had diagnosed her dog with life-threatening pyometra - needing urgent, emergency surgery (pyometra is a uterine infection and an animal may become very sick with lethargy, loss of apetite, vomiting, and bloody or pus discharge) - and quoted her $4,000 in order to save her life.
The owner revealed that she couldn’t afford the surgery and, even though Pepsi was older, she did not want to lose her baby.  Our amazing veterinarian, Dr. Sandra Andrulis, reached out to the owner to obtain more information, and, of course, she agreed to do the emergency surgery for Pepsi… so momma rushed to us from two hours away!!!!
Our clinic performed the following for almost 1/10 the quoted price: Spay, Pyometra Dog Level 1, IV Catheter Placement, IV Fluids, Cerenia Injection, Famotidine Injection, Gabapentin 100 mg, Cefazolin Injection, Enrofloxacin 68mg, E-Collar.
And a couple of hours later? Momma and Pepsi were both able to leave with smiles on their faces.

We are happy to report that today, Pepsi is thriving!

Do you know of any low-income families and animals that need help?  Let us know!  Thank you for all you do for the animals now...and in the future.

Warmest paws,

Erik
